THE FREIENFELD WINES
The name FREIENFELD crowns our highest quality wines, which we bottle only in the very best years: our Cabernet Sauvignon and our Chardonnay. Thanks to geographical and geological conditions, the warm locations around the village center of Kurtatsch have proved ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The loose calcareous soils of the best Chardonnay vineyards in Cortaccia are the basis for the creation of an extraordinarily elegant Chardonnay. Only the grapes from the best and oldest vineyards evolve into these exceptional wines, which we vinify only when the season’s weather has been ideal.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon and our Chardonnay FREIENFELD, named after the original seat of Cantina Kurtatsch, the manor Ansitz Freienfeld, represent the pinnacle of quality winemaking in Kurtatsch. The cellar of this Renaissance estate has been, since the very beginning, the barrique cellar of the winery.
Early on, Cabernet Sauvignon FREIENFELD made its mark in the wine world. It was one of the first South Tyrolean wines to carry the coveted "Tre bicchieri" award from Gambero Rosso in the 1990s. The 2015 vintage, the first after three years, sees the return of this exceptional wine with a new look and receives his white counterpart with the Chardonnay FREIENFELD.
THE FREIENFELD LABEL
The label of the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon FREIENFELD in 1990 showed a fresco from the historic Ansitz Freienfeld. A homage to origin, a return to the roots of Cantina Kurtatsch.
The sixteenth century fresco in the drinking hall of the manor shows a scene from Ovid's "Metamorphoses" - the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe. Head over heels in love with each other, their love has no chance due to the disapproval of their parents. Whispering to each other through a crack in the wall of their neighboring houses, they agree to escape. Due to a series of unfortunate misunderstandings during their escape, the two lovers kill themselves, each dying for love of the other.
The new label of Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva FREIENFELD 2015 combines tradition and modernity. The story depicted in the fresco inspired the young South Tyrolean artist Margit Pittschieler: the crack visible in the fresco adorns the label of the FREIENFELD in a strong ruby red, reminiscent of the crack through which the two lovers secretly communicated.
"After numerous drafts and studies, a lovingly detailed version was created in which Pyramus and Thisbe whisper to each other through the intense ruby red crack even after death, seemingly awakening them to life again."
Margit Pittschieler, artist
The label of is white counterpart, the Chardonnay Riserva FREIENFELD, shows the second scene of the fresco. In the judgment of Paris, an episode in Greek mythology, the youth Paris has to make the verdict which of the three goddesses Aphrodite, Athena or Hera, is the most beautiful. Again, the crack, visible in the fresco, was depicted and adorns the label in gold.
"Due to perfect physiological ripeness of the grapes of our best Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, we are able to vinify extraordinary wines in FREIENFELD quality."
