Alto Adige Cabernet SAUVIGNON RISERVA DOC Freienfeld
As early as the first historical phase of planting, the warmest slopes of Kurtatsch proved ideal for the Cabernet. The name of this wine derives from a Renaissance estate in Kurtatsch: Ansitz Freienfeld. As a wine, it has come to symbolize an assemblage of the municipality’s very best Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. The clayey and porous gravel bed is a multifaceted little terroir of its own, the unique soil of which brings out the very best from the demanding grape variety. The Freienfeld Cabernet, a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, represents the quintessence of quality viticulture in Kurtatsch. In fact, Freienfeld is made only when the weather conditions for a given vintage are optimal. Maturation of the young wine is carried out in medium-toasted French barriques. The wine’s powerful structure is thus enriched with a velvety, toasted aroma. During bottle aging its dramatic bouquet – reminiscent of wild culinary herbs and damp earth – mellows, incorporating bay leaf, rosemary, marjoram, lavender and peppermint. The notable richness of fruit (blackcurrants, cherries and plums) is supported by a smooth tannic structure, the persistence of which is spectacular in the finish.

The name Freienfeld derives from a medieval Ansitz manor of the same name, located in the village center of Kurtatsch. Between the winery's 1900 founding and 1923, the Ansitz served both as the actual winery and its administrative headquarters; the beautiful cellars of the Ansitz now house the barrique cellars and wine archive. This exceptional wine does not originate from one single vineyard site, but rather is an assemblage of the best and oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Kurtatsch. Freienfeld is vinified only when weather permits throughout the course of the entire year.
