Alto Adige Chardonnay DOC Caliz
The name “Caliz” derives from the Latin terms Calix (calyx) und Calx (limestone). Our Chardonnay Caliz grows exclusively on light gravelly soil with a high share of limestone. The yield is reduced to 65 hl per hectare. Its delicate bouquet is reminiscent of ripe pineapple, baby bananas and lime zest. The characteristic opulent Mediterranean fruitiness complements tight acid structure from selected lots of Chardonnay from higher altitude vineyards. The aging of 6 months on the fine lees in large wooden barrels gives the wine complexity and consistency while the warm influence of southern winds and the cool nights under the limestone cliffs add additional elegant spiciness.

The Chardonnay vineyards are located principally on the foothills of the Mendel Massif, at altitudes ranging between 250 and 500 meters. It is the subsoil here, which is light, sandy and calcareous, that lends this Chardonnay its unique character. Katabatic winds in the evening provide the all-important day/night temperature differential, and thus the wine’s unmistakable aromatic diversity.
